The Music of Brazil

The Acadêmicos da Ópera Samba School is a group of over 100 performers who specialize in the music and dance of Brazil. We play all kinds of rhythms from Brazil, but our focus is on samba.

Click the links below to listen to some of the rhythms we play (files are in mp3 format):

Samba Sample 2 (1.18 MB)

Maracatu (908 kB)

Samba Reggae (991 kB)

Timbalada (790 kB)

Samba Afro (638 kB)

Historically the most popular of all the Brazilian rhythms, samba is played very fast with a powerful drive. You simply cannot sit still when you hear samba. Sambas are traditionally performed in Brazil by neighborhood escolas de samba (samba schools), many of which perform in the famous Sambódromo in Rio de Janeiro during the pre-Lenten Carnaval.

Want to join us?

Acadêmicos da Ópera rehearses on Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30 pm. The Samba School owns all the Brazilian percussion instruments needed to supply a 40+ member bateria (drum section), so all you have to do is show up. Most veteran members have bought their own instrument (which makes practicing at home much easier).

If you would like to join, please e-mail Jacaré.
